CSUF Center for Entrepreneurship Update – March 2013

The following is a message from Center Director John Bradley Jackson

The Spring semester is well underway and we are quickly approaching some exciting events.

Research Week 2013 The first of these events is called Research Week. Of particular interest to you would be the Friday, March 22 session at the Fullerton Marriott that features panels and speeches on topics that are of interest to students and professionals. Six CSUF faculty members will present easy to understand “posters” which will highlight innovative new research in Life Sciences. No registration is necessary for this event and parking is free (just tell the Marriott parking attendants that you are there for Research Week). We will have a table so stop on by!

The CSUF Business Plan Competition 2013 (#CSUFBizPlan2013 for those of us active on social media) is moving along nicely and we are happy to announce that we have 50% more entrants this year than we did last year! The big event, the Finals, will be held on Wednesday, April 17 from 9:30 am to noon in TSU Pavilion A. Everyone is welcome so bring a friend or an investor! There will be raffle prizes.

Our big news of the month is that Two of our Student Consulting Projects placed third in the most recent national Small Business Institute (SBI) Project of the Year Competition. This is a prestigious honor and our heartiest congratulations go to the team members, coaches and professors who worked on these projects. This is the 21st year that CSUF Entrepreneurship student teams have placed in the top ten in this national competition.

Speaking of student consulting, we are now recruiting more clients for our  summer MBA session. The students will conduct a full strategic analysis for firm including operations, finance, human resources, and sales & marketing. If you are interested please send us an email to entrepreneurship@fullerton.edu or contact Ms. Charlesetta Medina at 657-278-8243.

Alex Can students really learn Entrepreneurship? We get asked that a lot and our answer is YES! For example, please meet Alex Rigo ’09, our newest success story. Alex took his business plan for an online parts store he created in our New Venture course and has turned it into a startup! We are very proud of what Alex has accomplished.

Finally, TriTech’s 4th Annual “Funding the Big Idea” is going to be held on March 28. There will be a business idea competition, “speed-dating” with investors and entrepreneurs, information on raising capital and so much more!

Sincerely,

John Bradley Jackson
Director, Center for Entrepreneurship
California State University, Fullerton

Deadline to Sign Up for CSUF Business Plan Competition Looms

It’s looming now but the deadline will be perfectly clear this Friday, since the deadline to sign up is at 11:59pm that night. In an effort to get as many of you to sign up we are going to offer an award; here’s how it will work.

Currently, we have approximately 35 people signed up through TITANium for the competition. That’s great, much better than last year’s competition at this point in time, but we want to do better. So, in order to spur sign ups we are initiating a multi-tiered contest with awards given for each level contestants achieved.

  • For 50 CSUF Business Plan Competition signups we will award one (1) $25 Best Buy Gift Certificate to one (1) entrant at random.
  • For 80 CSUF Business Plan Competition signups we will award one (1) $25 Best Buy Gift Certificate to two (2) entrants at random.
  • For 105 CSUF Business Plan Competition signups we will award one (1) $25 Best Buy Gift Certificate to three (3) entrants at random.
  • For 125 CSUF Business Plan Competition signups we will award one (1) $25 gift certificate (either to Best Buy or Starbucks) to four (4) entrants at random.

Since TITANium is proving to be a bit of a problem we are going to make signing up easier. Just send an email to csufentrepreneurship@fullerton.edu asking to sign up for the Business Plan Competition and we will manually sign you up for the CSUF Business Plan Competition. Please

NOTE: This is the Business Concept of the eventual second place finisher in the competition. The author of this document was an MBA student and did more than was asked for by creating Financial Documents and by including things like a Title Page, Executive Summary, Table of Contents and a Works Cited. He still was able to keep his Business Concept within the rules (5 pages, single spaced – appendices do not count towards this total).

CSUF Business Plan Competition Boot Camp 2013 Summary

*****NOTE: FOR RESOURCES YOU CAN USE PLEASE CLICK HERE *****

The CSUF Business Plan Competition 2013 is a CSUF competition that aims to help stimulate entrepreneurial activities amongst its students. In an effort to help foment some of this activity we have been hosting some Boot Camps over the last couple of weeks and we will be hosting two more. Both of the remaining Boot Camps will take place on Wednesday, February 6 2013; one will be held on the main Fullerton campus and the other on the CSUF Irvine campus. Here are the details:

Wednesday, Feb. 6 Third Boot Camp (with Raffle Prizes)
Fullerton Campus: 10:00am to 11:00am in SGMH 3230
Irvine Campus: 6:00pm to 7:00pm in rooms 123/124

If you are unable to make it to either of these Boot Camps nor have you attended either of the previous ones that does not mean you cannot enter this year’s competition. All you have to do to enter is sign up for the competition through TITANium (directions found in the GUIDE) by Friday, February 15 and meet the deadlines for all further steps (again, directions and information can be found in the GUIDE). However, it is helpful if you are able to attend one of the upcoming Boot Camps. Here’s a taste of what you can expect.

For more information on this competition’s schedule please refer to this page. More information will follow during the next couple of days and if you want to keep up-to-date please follow us in one or more of the following places:
