In an effort to raise awareness about the federal debt crisis, five Cal State Fullerton students will compete in the nationwide Up to Us competition. This contest challenges participants to educate their peers on the long-term national debt and how it will impact their lives.
Twenty-four student teams in the United States receive training and funds to run school-wide campaigns inspiring students to become a part of the movement. The winning team will receive $10,000 and be recognized at the Clinton Global Initiative University in March 2014.
The CSUF students taking on this challenge are economics majors Aaron Mendez ’14, Bita Kianian ’13, Sakshi Walia ’17, and political science majors Kelsey Brewer ’15, and Janet Perez ’14. The team will present two events to help students become better informed about the U.S. debt crisis.
On Feb. 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the team will host a documentary and discussion panel in the Titan Theater of the Titan Student Union. The discussion panel will be led by Mihaylo College Dean Anil Puri and includes professors from the political science department. This event is designed to provide students with an opportunity to get informed, ask questions and find out how they can voice their opinion about the debt crisis.
On Feb. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the team will host a rally in the central quad. There will be an opening speech from CSUF Provost Jose Cruz, music, games, food and education on the rising debt.
The CSUF Up to Us team is also finding ways to reach students through social media. A five-question survey on Facebook is designed to gauge how much students know about the federal debt.
In the central quad, 1,000 small flags will be displayed, each representing a portion of the federal debt, and Uncle Sam will wander the campus lugging a giant ball and chain representing the national debt.
The team will also be sending out hundreds of postcards asking policymakers to support policies that call for fiscal responsibility.
Watch this special announcement by Mihaylo alum U.S. Representative Ed Royce ’77.
