Excelling in the classroom and on the field can be a challenging feat for many student athletes. For fourth year Accounting major, Casey Lockey, playing soccer is what keeps her focused and on top of her school work.
“I’ve played soccer my whole life. Soccer keeps me balanced and I learned good time management because of it,” Lockey said.
Lockey plays defensive outside-back on the women’s soccer team. For the past two seasons, Lockey has earned the honor of making the Big West Conference Fall All-Academic Team. This honor is given to student-athletes who maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Lockey joined the soccer team in 2009.
Being a student athlete definitely has its struggles but for Lockey, it has also been rewarding.
“It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life. It’s made me stronger and I’ve met a lot of great people,” Lockey said.
Her advice to other student athletes, “Come in and be ready. Stay committed to school and your sport. It’s easy to get lost in the social scene but school and sports are most important.”
Lockey is deciding on what she wants to do with her career.
“I just want to get a degree, find a stable job and be happy,” Lockey said.
Lockey doesn’t see herself pursuing soccer any further.
“This is the end for me,” Lockey said.
She does however, plan on continuing to play for fun.
